From the analysis of the development trends and regional areas of competence the following medium-term goals with particularly promising development potential are formulated as guiding themes for Berlin and Brandenburg.

Guiding themes of the Focal Point of Biomedical Optics

Optical diagnosis procedures

Development of optical-spectroscopic diagnosis procedures in particular fluorescence-optical and coherence-optical based procedures for detecting relevant diseases as a basis for prevention and therapy (in vivo, in vitro).

Procedures and application aids for use in humans

Development of procedures for minimal invasive therapy of relevant diseases using optical energy especially with the goal of efficiency and protection of patients, in particular by integrating diagnosis and therapy.

New basis technologies and marketable products

Development and manageability of basis technologies for the cited goals, in particular radiation sources, sensor and 2D and 3D imaging technologies including intelligent evaluation procedures and conversion of these technologies into products which are marketable as individual devices.
