Development Trends / Benchmarking

From the analysis of the development trends in the area of optical communications and the regional areas of competence the following medium-term goals with particularly promising development potential are formulated as guiding themes for Berlin and Brandenburg:

Guiding themes of the Focal Point of Optical Technologies for the Internet

Fast Internet access:

Development of systems with higher bandwidths for fast Internet access (access using FTTH) and growing data interchange at higher network levels (Metro/Backbone for Datacom and Telecom as well as new applications like telemedicine and multimedia services) by developing cost-efficient and reliable opto-electrical interfaces in the 2.5 Gbps to 40 Gbps range on the basis of III-V technology (tunable lasers, lasers for access networks (CWDM), transmitters and receivers for high data rates >40 Gbps)

Integration of new materials:

Further development of photonic setup and connection technologies for cost-reducing integration technology using new materials (optical polymers and SOI)

Fast market access

Maintenance and expansion of equipment for network simulation and for testing opto-electronic components under network conditions for fast market access: test bed for network simulation and for evaluating components, setting up an accredited test laboratory for opto-electronic components, preservation of material analysis in the ZELMI (Central Establishment for Electron Microscopy) of the Technical University in Berlin.
