Focal point UV and X-Ray Technologies
Development Trends / Benchmarking
From the analysis of the development trends and regional areas of competence the following medium-term goals with particularly promising development potential are formulated as guiding themes for Berlin and Brandenburg:
Guiding themes of the Focal Point of UV and X-ray technologies
X-ray light is the light of micro- and nanotechnologies and therefore one of their most important tools
UV and X-ray technologies represent the connection between optics, micro- and nanotechnologies: only the short wavelengths in the nanometer and sub-nanometer range have enabled the use of light as a tool and probe for these future technologies but also for biology (genomics, proteomics) and medicine. In this field Berlin, with research establishments of international significance (BESSY, MBI), national laboratories for research, testing and standards (PTB, BAM), university focal points and a significant number of small and medium-sized companies, occupies an outstanding position both nationally and internationally.
X-ray analysis and microscopy lead to new findings in research and industry
In addition to the very strong basic research, a dynamically expanding network has developed in the last few years in this field between research and companies, with this being promoted not least by the senate-supported "Interdisciplinary Research Association for UV and X-Ray Technologies" (SenWissForschKult, 2001-2003), by initiatives such as the Center for Microsystem Technology (ZEMI) and by self-organized associations such as the 13-partner consortium for the development of "New Methods and Devices for X-Ray Material and Structural Analysis" (joint project, promoted by the Senate Department of Economics, Labor and Women's Affairs), or several successful project associations between companies and research establishments in the field of semiconductor lithography (e.g. industrial EUV reflectometer and "ELIAS" spectrograph). Other plans, such as a compact X-ray microscope as an innovative product of regional research and companies, are under way.
From the networking of research establishments and companies to the virtual factory
One exemplary indication of the co-operation between research, universities and companies is the "Technological Roadmap for X-Ray Material and Structural Analysis" which was initiated 2 years ago and has since advanced. The companies and institutions involved - despite a situation of competition in part in the market - have agreed to develop and continue a mutual regional strategy with a floating 5-year time horizon in the pre-competitive area. The first tangible results, in addition to extremely intensive communication between the partners, are successful joint projects on the basis of this "roadmap" as well as strategic considerations on the formation of a comprehensive "center for x-ray optical systems", for instance.
Coherent light source with high brilliance in the x-ray field leads to new horizons
Such a strong region needs beacons and visions - in addition to the new quality of the formation of associations and clusters, these are also large scientific projects such as the planned Free Electron Laser in the VUV area at BESSY which should make the region an internationally significant center for the use of coherent x-radiation for research and industry.
